TREATMENTS
The body always make sense – and if something doesn’t make sense, it probably means there is a piece of the jigsaw puzzle missing – together we will hunt for that missing piece.
You will be asked to complete a detailed history form prior to coming to your first appointment. This is a crucial starting place for trying to understand what is happening that creates ongoing pain.
At your first session, Jenny may spend some time asking you questions about the information in your form, and then doing some assessments. It can be helpful if you wear clothes that you can move easily in as she may want to watch you do certain movements to see if there are clues for how your body might be compensating.
The treatment is like a massage in that Jenny works primarily hands on rather than with tools or machines. But it is usually focused on areas that might be involved in causing your discomfort (which are not always the areas you feel the discomfort in consciously).
You will be asked to undress, as for a massage, and will be covered with towels (including hot towels in winter to keep you toasty warm). It is usually best to work directly on your skin – so that layers of material do not mask the feeling of your muscles and tissues, but you always have the right to determine how much clothing you are comfortable to remove. You should always wear underpants for hygiene purposes.
Jenny will often give you some homework to do (usually movement or self massage). It is very important that you do this – not just for the obvious reason – but also because it helps Jenny to assess whether the things that were treated in the last session are helping resolve your pain. When you have had an issue for a long time, the effects of a single treatment may only last for a day or two. This is normal at the start. If Jenny gives you homework, part of that is to determine whether the effects will last longer if you maintain the treatment at home. Therefore, if you don’t do the homework, it is much harder to tell whether this is the right focus of treatment for your body at this time.
